Sudden Hearing Loss

A close-up of an elderly man with short, grey hair, a matching beard and mustache, and a green, plaid button-up shirt holding up a bunch of red radishes and looking down at them. Beside him, an older woman with short, blonde hair and glasses and wearing a white cardigan, smiles up at him while she holds a cluster of green onions. She has a basket of produce on her arm and another wicker basket is below them filled with bananas, mushrooms, and lettuce. The background is slightly out of focus.

What Is Sudden Hearing Loss?

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rapid decline in hearing that typically develops within a few hours or up to three days. Most cases affect only one ear and may occur without warning.

Many people first notice sudden hearing loss when they:

Wake up unable to hear well in one ear
Have difficulty hearing during a phone call
Experience a popping sensation followed by decreased hearing
Notice ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
Feel dizziness or a sense of fullness in the affected ear
Because these symptoms can indicate a serious medical condition, they should never be ignored.
